Listening is Caring

Listening is Caring

Everyone deserves to be heard in a relationship but what does this look like?

Listening isn’t just about being quiet while your partner is talking and you’re in your head thinking about what you want to say next.

Listening is about eye contact, positive body language and listening to your partner’s perspective.

Listening is not talking over your partner because you want to get out of what is on your mind.

Listening includes validating your partner’s feelings and perceptions.

Not deflecting what they’re saying, defending or justifying your position, blaming your partner or bringing up the past.

Listening doesn’t include shutting your partner down or dismissing their feelings, telling them “Well I don’t feel that way!” or “You don’t have a right to feel like that!”

You are allowed to own your feelings and a safe space needs to be created in your relationship so you can both talk about how you feel.

When both people feel heard and understood it creates safety and trust in the relationship. Both people feel valued and supported.
