Toxic Cycles in Relationships

Characteristics that will destroy your relationship.

Perfectionism will take its toll on any relationship as well as being inflexible and rigid. These patterns come with unrealistic expectations that a partner will never reach.

When a partner tries to please the person who displays these characteristics, the partner will discover the goal post continues to move.

Any improvements made by the partner will not be acknowledged and instead, a new criticism will surface of the partner making all the changes.

Another characteristic that is destructive is one person believing they are better than their partner in all areas and it is their job to teach their partner how to do things “the right way” and
“how to be a better person”.

The partner is constantly receiving the messages “I’m not good enough”, “There’s something wrong with me”.

The other person may convince their partner there is something Psychologically wrong with them and they need to see a Psychologist.

This behaviour is Narcissistic and the characteristics are gaslighting.

The partner isn’t aware they are being set up to fail because the expectations of the other person are so unrealistic, they’ll never reach perfection.

Outcome.

One person puts themselves above their partner while their partner pulls away emotionally and physically.

One person fixates on their partner’s faults and will even have a long list in their mind of criticisms against them, leaving their partner feeling hopeless.

A person who has the characteristics of perfectionism, and is inflexible and intolerant will also lack empathy and self awareness.
