Relationships And Childhood Trauma

Relationships And Childhood Trauma

Children who grow up in an unsafe or insecure environment where there is no comfort or protection learn strategies to adapt on a day to day basis.

They learn to watch the adults around them, asses what the adults are feeling and judge their moods.

They learn to shut off their emotions and feelings and don’t allow others to see when they’re happy, sad, afraid or angry.

This is understandable in violent and unsafe and unpredictable environments but there is no place for this in an safe environment as it interferes with healthy adult relationships.

It stops the adult from receiving and giving love.

Children learn to trust the world around them through healthy attachments to the safe adults in their life.

They learn their value and role as a person in society.

When their environment is unsafe or unstable they learn they cannot trust others and they receive the message they are bad and the world is a horrible place.

Adults with a history of complex trauma have difficulty expressing their emotions and may exhibit anger and react violently in low stressful situations.
