According to Psychologist Dr Sue Johnson when a person feels cut off in their relationship, they go into a state of panic.
The brain codes this as painful and as a danger queue.
Every relationship has moments of disconnection.
If the connection is restored, the relationship becomes safe again.
The partner needs to tune into their partners distress, and respond on an emotional level.
The partner needs to open up and be present with them.
Reaching and responding on an emotional level is what transforms these moments of disconnection rather than getting stuck in angrily reaching for a response or shutting down.
If a couple can move into a state of repair they can learn to shape their relationship to outlast any issue that affects the relationship.
